I have been nominated for a Tribute Award 2014. A special thanks to Narda Els - owner of the Miss Deaf South Africa organization - for nominating me.
People with disabilities are a natural and integral part of our society and should have the opportunity to have their experiences, talents and capabilities recognized. Woman with disabilities, as members of society, should participate actively in the celebrations of Woman’s Month. It is against this background that in August 2010 Valhalla Arts joined forces with the KwaZulu-Natal Offices of the Premier together with the National Department of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities in launching TRIBUTES, a special initiative that honours woman with disabilities that have left a lasting legacy in our various forms of freedoms. The TRIBUTES initiative involves identifying, profiling and celebrating high-profile woman with disabilities that have contributed excellence in various fields of their personal lives and society. Each year 12 women are identified (with one celebrated posthumously) and invited from all over South Africa to be recognized in a three-day fun-filled celebration that is hosted in KwaZulu-Natal from the 29th–31st of August (annually).
There are 12 different categories. I have chosen the Creative Arts category:
Statuette for ‘Creative Arts’ is presented in recognition of a women with a disability who has left a legacy in the creative arts (music, literature, entertainment and visual arts) are whose works mark a contribution and in roads into the recognition of the talents and lives of people with disabilities in South Africa. This is in recognition of how their creative works accurately, positively and sensitively portray the status of people with disabilities and the many social issues they face.
Keep your thumbs crossed that I will get through the next round!
